The barley is cultivated on an innovative Scottish farm that not only produces food and livestock but also generates biomass for renewable energy. The Rose family has run Midcore Farm since 1912 and has been supplying organic malt to Bruichladdich Distillery since 2003. Crop rotation is fundamental to organic farming, with organic publican barley requiring a seven-year cultivation cycle. During this cycle, organic livestock such as cattle and sheep, along with organic oats, legumes, grass, carrots, and other vegetables, are grown, while more than 3 megawatts of green electricity are generated. By respecting the land, soil, and climate, the distillery develops a deeper understanding of terroir, resulting in the distinctive character of Bruichladdich whisky. This careful organic approach minimizes the impact of human intervention, allowing the cool northern coastal terroir to be directly infused into the spirits.
