Framed
Katsuhiro Saiki's Intersection series marks his first foray into oil painting after previously working in conceptual photography. He began this series shortly before leaving New York, where he had been based for many years, around 2018.
In these works, Saiki adheres to a self-imposed rule: he stretches canvas over a parallelogram-shaped wooden frame and paints two intersecting color fields. The area where the colors overlap remains neutral, unaffected by either hue. This approach reflects his response to the increasing political divide in American society at the time, conveying a message of imagining an "intermediate space" rather than emphasizing opposition.
The color fields are not painted uniformly; instead, Saiki embraces subtle variations, using expressive brushstrokes to bring warmth and human touch to the compositions.
